Definition
The key allowed to create new tokens of a given mint. Revoking it fixes the token supply permanently.
Why it matters
As long as a mint authority exists, someone can create more tokens and dilute holders. Revoking it, or explaining who holds it and why, is one of the first things buyers and listing partners check.
What to check
- Revoke it after the final mint if the supply is meant to be fixed.
- If inflation is planned, put it behind a multisig or program logic.
Related terms
- Freeze authorityThe key that can freeze token accounts of a given mint, preventing transfers.
- SPL tokenA fungible or non-fungible token created with the Solana Program Library Token Program or its successor, Token-2022, which adds extensions such as transfer fees and confidential transfers.
- Token-2022 (Token Extensions)The newer Solana token program.
- MultisigA wallet that requires approval from several signers before executing a transaction.
