Definition
The smallest unit of SOL. One SOL equals one billion (1,000,000,000) lamports, and fees, rent and balances are counted in lamports.
Why it matters
Programs and transactions work in lamports, not SOL, so fees, rent and balances in code are integers of lamports. Mixing up the two units is a classic source of bugs in client code.
What to check
- Make sure client code converts between SOL and lamports in one place only.
Related terms
- RentThe SOL balance an account must hold to stay on-chain, proportional to its data size.
- Priority feeAn optional extra fee, priced per compute unit, that makes a transaction more likely to be included quickly when the network is busy.
- AccountThe unit of storage on Solana.
