Definition
The measure of computation a Solana transaction may use. Each transaction has a compute budget, and efficient programs use fewer compute units, which can lower priority fees and improve composability.
Why it matters
Programs that use too many compute units hit limits in complex transactions, cost users more in priority fees and compose badly with other protocols. Compute efficiency is a common reason teams write hot paths in native Rust.
What to check
- Ask developers to report compute usage per instruction in their tests.
- Ask how they would handle a transaction that runs over its compute budget.
Related terms
- Priority feeAn optional extra fee, priced per compute unit, that makes a transaction more likely to be included quickly when the network is busy.
- Native Rust programA Solana program written without the Anchor framework, handling account parsing and validation by hand.
- CPI (cross-program invocation)A call from one Solana program to another within the same transaction, for example a DeFi program calling the Token Program to move tokens.
