Definition
An off-chain service that reads Solana transactions and accounts and stores them in a queryable database, so applications can show history and aggregated data quickly.
Why it matters
Solana RPC is not built for history queries or aggregates, so most production dApps need an indexer for dashboards, activity feeds and analytics. Teams choose between hosted indexing services and running their own.
What to check
- Ask how the indexer handles missed slots and backfills.
- Ask what the app shows users when the indexer lags behind the chain.
